Mini Jam 91 – “UFO / Fish as a Mechanic”- 16th of 146
Itch.io – Newgrounds – Gamejolt
Mini jam is 3 days which is a lot harder than week-long jams. Not especially creative, the concept of a ufo doing fishing with a tractor beam was very common. Implemented a lot of upgrades which was cool but I think this would have benefited a lot from either hidden things at the bottom of the ocean or making the tractor beam feel better to use. Not bad for 72 hours but not great.

Wanted to go with a simple concept coming back to gamedev after a break. The core of the game is very simple, stay on the platform. I had a lot of other things going on this week so I didn’t get as much done on this as I would have liked but I did get a solid game completed in time.

I had been looking for an excuse to implement flocking for a while. I figured “Eat the Enemy” provided an opportunity to make a game where you control and grow a swarm that’s implemented with flocking. I got the flocking implemented pretty quickly but I struggled a bit in creating a fun game around that. The game is ok, but not one of my favorites.

One of my favorite jam games, the first game to use the QbzTools package where I cleaned up tech from older jams for reuse. Without this package, I probably wouldn’t have been able to make a game this complex within a week.

In Weekly Game Jam 180, there was a highly rated game that was a very well polished endless shooter. I was really impressed with this game and wanted to do my own very simple but polished endless shooter.

A tremendous disaster. Truly, a terrible game. I was tempted to have the game site links above just link to better games I made. The blog post goes into the disaster. A silver lining is that I got to program AI cars which respected stop signs, that was sort of fun.

I like twin-stick shooters and they’re a pretty reasonably scoped genre for a weekly game jam so I was waiting for an opportunity to do one. This is the first jam where I directly collaborated with others. It was really cool to work with Austin to adjust the music based on the game’s spawn timings.

I took off three days from work so I wouldn’t have to work when there was a very distracting highly contentious election going on. So I marathoned Seinfeld on one of my monitors while I poured dozens and dozens of hours into this very overscoped game. Even with all the extra time, I fell short of my goals because there was just too much programming work to do for a week. The game is alright though, not terrible.

Game Jams – Sleepy Tower Defense and Nested Catapults
The core tech of this game only took a Sunday afternoon to make. Then it only took a little bit of time after work Monday and Tuesday night to finish this up by adding more levels and sound. Actually a solid game, especially the updated version. This game shows that more complexity (and therefore time spent) doesn’t necessarily make a better game, I think it’s better than some of my other games that were much more complex.

Game Jams – Sleepy Tower Defense and Nested Catapults
If I remember correctly, I was having a hard time thinking up a good game for “siesta”. My previous two games had basically no UI so I wanted to do a game that would require a decent amount of UI work so I chose to do a tower defense. As of writing, this is my most popular game on itch. That’s a little surprising to be honest; I personally wouldn’t consider it to be in the top half of my games. It’s alright, just a basic tower defense with a minor twist.

It’s got all the core parts of a game but this was the first time I was using unity in years and it shows; it’s a little rough around the edges. That being said, I think this was a solid concept choice for my first game jam. It was only important that I finish a game in the week, I knew it wasn’t going to blow anyone away.
